Eating out of my pantry/All You Challenge

I have been doing an annual pantry clean out for years! Even before I started couponing. It started one summer when my husband went from salary to corporation. That meant we had to go about 4-6 weeks without a steady income. I remember rolling change to get $100 and then using to buy only the things we absolutely needed (no coupons used) and buy them on sale! I then got creative and emptied out the cupboards/fridge/freezer for our meals. We actually ate very well and got to try a whole lot of new recipes. I decided to make it an annual thing, both to save money and get rid of the food before it goes bad! I usually do it sometime in the summer, it helps offset the cost of school clothes/supplies.

This year, I am doing it in conjunction with the All You Grocery Challenge! The challenge is to spend $25 of less per person in your family per week for four weeks. Week one just wrapped up and here it the breakdown.

Here is my pantry, it is quite spare right now, because we have supposed to have been moving in 4-6 weeks for 4-6 weeks and it still looks like 4-6 weeks, so I haven't been doing a lot of stockpile shopping. I want to move less and this is one way to cut easily.

Sunday: (Father's Day)
  • Breakfast: oatmeal, juice
  • Lunch: homemade lasagna, cheese bread, green beans, milk
  • Dinner: leftover pizza (from night before), broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, peas with ranch dipping sauce, water

  • Dinner: homemade chicken pot pie, milk
  • Spent: $10.53 for milk, juice, and yogurt

Wednesday:

  • Lunch: leftover tacos my husband brought home, yogurt, water
  • Dinner: homemade veggies lasagna, wheat bread & butter, milk
  • Spent: $5.67 for tacos from Taco Bell

Thursday:

  • Breakfast: oatmeal/cold cereal, orange juice
  • Lunch: tuna fish sandwiches (my husband caught and canned the tuna!), oranges, water
  • Dinner: chicken strip baskets and slushes from Dairy Queen, picnic at our new house!
  • Spent: $22.07 at Dairy Queen

Friday:

  • Breakfast: oatmeal/cereal, water
  • Lunch: leftover tuna fish sandwiches, green beans, water
  • Dinner: hamburgers, homemade bean dip with chips, milk
  • Spent: $15.98 on milk, cheese, bread, and juice also spent $4.15 for cookie treat at the mall.

Saturday:

  • Breakfast: pancakes, scrambled eggs, homemade hash browns, bacon, orange juice (My husband made a fantastic breakfast for us and 6 guests!)
  • Lunch: turkey/cheese sandwiches, yogurt, juice
  • Dinner: Leftovers, milk
  • Spent: $32 on groceries for breakfast

Total for the week: $90.40 for the week, well under our allotted $125!

This week is going to be harder as we have my daughter's 2nd birthday and the 4th of July! Have to get creative!!

Friday Food For Thought

Actually overhead in the store...

  1. Cashier: "Ma'am do you want your catalina?"

Customer: "No, that's okay."

Cashier: "It is for $1 off a future purchase."

Customer: "No, I don't need it."

*Me thinking, what the...if I hadn't been wresting 2 kids and supervising my daughter trying to do the self checkout, I think I have jumped over and grabbed it!

2. Arrive at Rite Aid, I hear the customer saying, "I always shop at Walgreens because they have Register Rewards."

Cashier (a new one to me): "Oh, we have been in town much longer and we have a much better program." She then walks her over to the SCR catalog and starts to explain it to her. I am thinking, okay good cashier, yeah! Well....

3. About 10 minutes later, with same cashier...Cashier: "Did you buy another one of these because you have three coupons and two products."

Me: "Yes, but 2 are manufacturer's coupons and one is a Rite Aid Video Values coupons, they are stackable."

Cashier: "You aren't listening to me. (yes, she actually said that). Let's try this again. You have 2 products and 3 coupons."

Me: "I know, but you can use three because one is a Rite Aid coupon."

Cashier: "But the other two have your name on them, so I can't accept this one too." She had already, put them in the drawer so she couldn't look again.

Me: (thinking, okay that is a new one). "I have used Rite Aid coupons with manufacturer's all the time. They will scan, there is never a problem. You can ask your manager."

Cashier then just goes on scanning, an item, then the coupon, then an item...totally friendly and chatty, meanwhile a line is building and someone's (maybe mine?) children are getting out of control.

Finally at the end, she just scans it and it goes through. I say politely, "Thank you, I have never had a problem with stacking the video value coupons."

Cashier: "Well, the other two did say your name on them, but I don't care anymore it is not worth arguing over $2!" ... "Oh, look you got lots more +Up rewards! Don't you love it!" (yes, but you are killing it for me!)

Me: stunned....but since I have never seen her before and got my deal and mostly because my son is trying to climb up a display of garden benches...I leave.

Now granted in every other way she was friendly and nice to my been-shopping-way-to-long children. I just hate the little things that kill a couponing high!

Also that is why I prefer to shop alone :)

Rite Aid Recap

Well, summer is my least favorite time to coupon. Mostly because instead of one helper, I suddenly have 3, which makes large trips almost impossible. I did go to Rite Aid today to get some freebies/money makers! All of this (plus 2 pairs of kids sunglasses) will be a $5.05 money maker after +Up rewards and SCRs!

  1. No rebates, but I did add $9 in +Up rewards. My receipts also say that I am at the Gold + level, but I don't see who that is already possible. I might have to investigate that.
  2. Spent $19.95 out of pocket, (in between rebates)
  3. Retail Amount to Date: $1326.47
  4. Amount spend out of pocket in 2010: $133.43

House Party!

Last weekend, I just hosted my 3rd house party! House party is a great site that offers "party packs" to selected hosts. The packs contain high value samples/freebies to share with friends and family. It is a great way to test new products and spread the word for companies. It is all FREE! My party was the Hasbro Game Night Party! It was the best party pack so far, with 3 full size board games (Catch Phrase, Taboo, and Trivial Pursuit), 6 boxes of Nabisco crackers, chocolate candy, and of course coupons. It was kind of a busy weekend, so there were only a few of us, but we had fun playing Catch Phrase together. My daughter was so excited that we get to keep the game because she can read the clues herself! We also had great cracker and dip samplers and a pizza bar.

Of course, there are always lots of parties to apply for. Right now you can apply for:

  • FiOS Viewing party (must have Verizon)

  • Kleenex Clean & Fresh Hands

  • Splenda Summer

  • Play on With Play Station

  • Beat BBQ Boredom

They are always updating and adding new parties too. Head on over to house party to see what you would like!

Free Family Fun!

This is mainly a local post, (Roseburg, OR) but I am scouting out free family activities this summer. I know I need all the help I can get! They usually send home notes for these things from school, but if you don't have any in school yet, it is hard to find out about these. Here is what is free this week in Douglas County:

  1. Friday, Stewart Park, Movie: The Blind Side 7:30 pm (set up and entertainment) movie begins at 9:30 More info here

    2. Saturday, Free Fishing Day in Oregon, no license needed, more info here . Depending on the site, there may also be raffles, food, prizes, and extra fun for the kids.

    3. Douglas County Library has several free kids programs. Summer Reading program, each child will receive a book and prizes for reading. Also every Thursday at 10:30 is story hour. The kids enjoy stories/songs/crafts all related to a fun theme. Next Thursday, June 17th at 4:00 pm, there is a special summer event, Sand Painting.

Free Stephenie Meyer Novella Link

The new free Stephenie Meyer Novella is up, The Second Short Life of Bree Tanner. It is here online for fans to read until July 5th. Just click on contents and you can read it there. Thanks so much freebies4mom! And while we are talking Twilight...anybody crazy enough (besides me) to go to the midnight showing of Eclipse?

Dairy Promo

The Dairy Promo is running at Albertsons and will through the month of June. Here is a list of the complete participating products. (Click to make larger) The promo is simple, buy 5 participating products, get $5 catalina. Each week different items are going to be on sale too. There is no limit to how many times you can do the promo. The coupon does say, not to be used to buy dairy, so I am not sure if it will roll or not?
Here is what I did...

  • Minute Maid $3.99, used $1.50/1 from coupons.com (not currently available, but has reset a couple of times, so check back)
  • 2 Frigo Cheese Snacks $3.99, used 2 $1/1 from http://www.frigocheeseheads.com/
  • 2 Darigold Sour Cream $1.89, used B1G1 free coupon from 3/28 SS
  • Total: $10.36 and got a $5 catalina back!

*There are many other scenarios with cheaper out of pockets, but this is what I knew we needed and would use.

Free Today!

I got all this for free today and you can too!

  1. Dozen eggs, free with Wrights bacon purchase at Albertsons
  2. Oreo cookies, become a fan of Nabisco on Facebook to get a coupon for 1 free package cookies, when you buy 1 package of cookies and 1 gallon of milk. You can get this coupon today only, but they have a high value coupon the first Monday of every month!
  3. Free bananas with peelie found on Nabisco Nilla Wafers
  4. Darigold Sour Cream, free with B1G1 Free coupon from 3/28 SS (also counts towards dairy promo...see previous post)
  5. Gerber Yogurt, used $1.50 coupon from catalina machine and it had a "try me free" peelie on the back, so actually I made $1.50 on this one. Also, we have tried these and they are good.

Okay, the ad shows wellness + up rewards are going nationwide? This may just be a regional ad, but it is probably coming soon. I will have to see how this actually works next week and let you know.
